Silk Care 101: How to Keep Your Silk Fabrics Luxurious

So you've bought yourself a pair of silk pjs and upgraded your sleep. But now comes the question: how do you care for silk to ensure it maintains its beauty and longevity? While looking after silk does take a little more care than synthetic pyjamas, it's well worth it when you consider just how long silk pyjamas can last.

Hand wash silk for longevity

Silk is a delicate fabric, and to maintain its quality and extend its life, hand washing is the way to go. Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a mild detergent specially designed for silk or delicates. Gently agitate the water to create suds, then immerse your silk pyjamas. Let them soak for a few minutes, then gently swish them around. Rinse thoroughly but gently in cool water.

Avoid the dryer with silk

Heat is silk's enemy. Therefore, avoid the dryer at all costs. Instead, after washing, gently squeeze out excess water (don't wring or twist), then lay your pyjamas flat on a clean, dry towel. Roll up the towel with the pyjamas inside to absorb more water, then unroll and leave the pyjamas to air dry.

Iron silk on the lowest setting (or steam it!)

If you need to iron your silk sleepwear, make sure to do it while the garment is still slightly damp. Use the lowest heat setting on your iron and always iron on the inside of the garment. If your iron has a silk setting, use that - you don't want to overdo it.

An even better option? Using a hand-held steamer at a safe distance to gently smooth out the creases without risking over heating the delicate silk fibres.

Store your silk pyjamas somewhere cool and dry

When it comes to storing your silk pyjamas, keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can fade the fabric. Also, give them plenty of space to prevent wrinkling.

For stubborn stains, go for professional cleaning

For stubborn stains or when in doubt, consider professional cleaning. Dry cleaners have experience with delicate fabrics like silk and can ensure your sleepwear is cleaned without damage.

Caring for silk sleepwear may require a bit more effort than your cotton PJs, but the benefits are well worth it. With the right care, your silk pyjamas will maintain their luxurious feel and look for years to come.
